On This Day last year, I attempted—and failed miserably—to correctly pronounce even half of the official name of this town in Wales.

@rscottjones Do you know what the town name means (I share the Jones name, but Welsh is about 6 generations back for me)
@eludom Some debate here, but it's something akin to "St. Mary's Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave." Which, I dunno, seems like an excessively precise description for a town, but adopting the "full" name was a publicity stunt.
@rscottjones my dad lived here as a student. The locals just call it Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, and everyone else calls it LlanfairPG
@rscottjones I had a friend when I was a student whose party trick was to pronounce this town’s name. I can still hear him do it, though could never compete with him!
@crossingthethreshold We did listen to the correct pronunciation a few times while there; I can see why it's a good party trick!
@writingslowly I know they primarily expanded it for tourism purposes and that locals definitely didn't say the whole thing. Seems to have worked, because yeah, it got me to go there, I love dumb stuff like that!
