And then everything broke, SMB, SSH, on my Pi. So I removed all the software, turned off the services. Should teach me not to install 3rd-party software. Back to file exchange via USB-sticks.

@renevanbelzen ah that might be a network issue if SSH broke, too. I have had issues with Samba when using the Pi4’s USB 3 ports — it kills the entire OS. I stopped using Samba.

@rom Anyway, it's Sneakernet for me now to exchange files. Too bad Raspberry Pi OS isn't robust enough yet to offer similar file exchange services as MacOS, though they have their issues too, caused by the complexity of WiFi protocols and insecurity of Bluetooth.

Update: I got SSH working again, using a fresh OS install, plus the apps I really need on my Pi, plus Secure ShellFish on iPadOS. That’s it for file exchange for me ATM.

@renevanbelzen well, I use it as a file server, pi-hole/DNS server and Plex media server. I just don’t mount the RPi to access files - hence no need for samba. I can use SFTP though. :)

@renevanbelzen ah. This is good to know. At least it is operational once again. :) clone the SDcard so you can easily revert back to it after you do some experiments. :)

@rom How do I clone an SD card?

@renevanbelzen Secure ShellFish is so well done. I used to use Blink Shell for remote access to my work machine, but it stopped connecting properly even though SSF has no issues using the same key.

@pimoore So you think it's worth the purchase of a license for the lifetime of software?

@renevanbelzen Absolutely worth it, it was a no-brainer for me at the time. Not only do I use it for SSH access to work, but also with our SMB shares. It can even work with DigitalOcean droplets right inside the app.

@renevanbelzen you need an SD card reader and then use the RPi app to clone the SD card

@rom I only see options to install img files, not to create them. I installed the RPi Imager on Raspberry Pi OS.

@renevanbelzen can you check Accessories if the SD card copier app is there?

@renevanbelzen ah there - I linked to another app previously, sorry. It was there all along. :) that SD Card Copier can clone your SD card.

@rom Saw that already. It even shrinks the partition if need be. However, you'll need a big enough SD card or USB stick. I have to buy one of those (in fact, re-order another 128 GB SD card) That'll have to wait a week, because I'm really low on funds right now. Maybe order two, to be sure, and use them in rotation. They are affordable, but not throw-away affordable. The recent files I can store on an USB stick. Too bad I don't have local network storage for putting clones on by month. That isn't in the budget, I'm afraid.

@renevanbelzen ah true. Was tempted to go 128GB route as well but settled for a couple of 64GBs instead. :)

@rom That makes so much sense. Those ultra-fast class-10 SD cards are relatively expensive. But that's what you want, because of read and write speeds. Then lower capacity is the compromise one has to make.

@renevanbelzen let's wait for another sale and invest on those speed demons. :)

@rom It's that kind of thinking about computers that made me broke three times before in my life. Better for me is to only buy what I need, not to give in to consumerism. Your mileage may vary on this attitude.
