Super psyched to cancel my gas service today! We replaced our old gas furnace and water heater with electric. (Finally, we booked in August 😂)

I’m digging the extra heat in our bedroom from the heat pump – it’s always been 3-4 degrees cooler than other parts of the house.

@tracydurnell We have a heat thing like that as our primary warming source. We lose electrical power a few times each year, once for bout four days, so our gas-powered 'fireplace' gets significant usage then.

I miss our multihead heat pumps in Japan for this reason; each room gets their own HVAC source while other spaces like halls and closets get none — only heating or cooling the part of the house you’re actually in also saves lots of money. So sure, blast the heat in the bedroom at night because you’re not paying to heat the kitchen, living room, den, etc…
And heat pumps are way more efficient so the newer ones heat and cool better for less energy.
At some point I will need to do this too as our lethargic central HVAC unit is UNDER the house in the crawl space (who’s bright idea was that anyway) and several zones of less than ideal climate are always nagging me this time of year.

@rogerscrafford if I'm remembering right, our gas heat and fireplace didn't work when the power was out? 🤔 We usually only lose power for a few hours at a time, fortunately 🤞 Four days feels like a long haul! Ironically we even have solar, but it also shuts off during outages for safety since it's connected to the grid.

@tracydurnell Many gas fireplaces can operate without AC, but need a bunch of AA batteries in place and a switch properly set. The time between outages for us is just long enough that I forget the changeover process. I tried documenting it, but wasn't smart enough to store the notes in a sensible location :-(
