@rnv What is this “enough books” concept? Those words don’t belong anywhere near each other. 🤓

@rnv I probably have more than enough books in terms of volume(s) but a substantial proportion of them aren’t the right books, so I need to buy more.

@rnv I thought that over a decade ago. Felt I did not read enough as a child. Now it is a matter of having time to read. I have grown the audiobook collection instead. Listen where ever I am.

@rnv I mean... those are words you have used there, I'm sure of it, but I just can't translate them into meaning.

@rnv only every time I move, esp. when piling them all on the floor, which is when I realize that books are just giant bricks made of paper, and how is it possible that I have this many of them? 😄

@rorysaur It sneaks up on you, doesn’t it? A book here, two books there, pretty soon it’s almost like your own library...

@Munish I can definitely understand the appeal. From time to time, I’ve been tempted to explore audiobooks, but I tend to stumble over one of three issues: I’m a very fast reader, and no narrator can keep up with my “inside my head” voice; also, the book often suggests a voice to me, which never seems to match the performer; and I always read with a pencil in hand and I’ve never figured out to underline in an audiobook. Oh, and a fourth stumbling block: virtually nothing I read is ever available as an audiobook.

@rnv I have tried audiobooks many times, but regardless of the narrator, my attention inevitable drifts, and I have to skip back. I guess it also happens when I read "regular" books, but then when attention drifts, I stop reading.

@simonwoods Little-known fact: the full version of Chomsky’s famous sentence is: “Colorless green ideas sleep furously because they have too many books.” // @Bruce

@helgeg Same here. Tends to happen to me on podcasts too.

@helgeg I’ve tried audiobooks, and can’t seem to be able to listen without that side effect. Also podcasts seem to have the same effect on me. True, I listen in the evening, but they always do that! Third attempt at Snowden on Rogen, and third time I’ve driftezzzZZzz

@helgeg @rnv Same. The only place audiobooks work for me is while driving. Even then, I'm not paying that much attention. After all, I'm driving! :).

But no, as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as too many books.

@rnv I understand what you are saying here. Took me a while to get used to audiobooks. Right now they entertain me whilst I walk and not for everyone

@rnv @Bruce See now, I don't get the reference at all and yet am immediately inspired to remember to add Chomsky to my "required reading" list. That's my preferred version of virality.

@simonwoods Oh, I can so relate. And it explains perfectly how folks like us tend to end up with “too many books”...

(I’ve never actually read Chomsky, I’ve just heard the sentence referenced by people who have. And I think I prefer Stephen Fry’s version in this sketch...
