We should pick one country as a permanent host of the Summer Olympics and one country as the permanent host of the Winter Olympics.

@tones @pyrmont ... and then other countries start making their own Olympics. And then we no longer have the Olympics. 🤷‍♂️

@simonwoods @tones At the risk of sounding like I'm more invested in this idea than I really am, I was envisaging a permanent host being selected with broad international agreement. Given the ever-increasing costs of holding the Games and the fact that the number of candidate countries has been decreasing in recent years, I'm not so sure other countries would be in that much of a rush to hold their own event.

@pyrmont Given not all countries are still in agreement on such clear a task like addressing a worldwide pandemic, it is difficult to expect them to agree on anything else. @simonwoods @tones

@amit @simonwoods @tones I'd argue that addressing a novel global pathogen isn't as clear a task as deciding on a permanent host for a regularly scheduled event but yes, there may be difficulties in practice. That said, we're arguing at that point about implementation details.

To be clear, this really was a #showerthought and not one I'm seriously wedded to but I was surprised how agreeable I found the concept. After all, in what way does the location really matter? Wouldn't it be basically the same thing if it were always held in Greece?

@pyrmont @amit @tones Two or three in a row sounds interesting, for sure. It's like a compromise so good it'll never be agreed upon. 😂
