“Don’t let your camera outlive you — aows”

Applies to a lot of tools, not just cameras.

@baldur Yes yes yes. This.

If I resisted the temptation to kayak with my DSLR, I would not have this photo or others like it. Yes, cameras (and lenses!) are expensive. But taking risks is part of life.

@AlanRalph I agree wholeheartedly with your comment as well. Reminds me that I’m overdue to check on how New Hampshire is doing on the right to repair issue.

@fgtech That is indeed a great photo. Agree about taking your camera everywhere coz you never know.

@pratik Thank you! I also had lots of fun in a kayak with my son. He was very patient with me as I worked to line up the shot in the wind and waves.

@fgtech Good one! I was kayaking last year with a friend of mine and his new-ish Nikon with fancy lens fell overboard and sunk quietly to the bottom. Although things like this seem to happen to him often, so I'm not sure if it demonstrates a hazard or a person-specific handling deficiency :)

@jack Argh, what a loss! For me, I would get “I told you so” looks from family.

I do have limits. I wouldn’t have the camera out on a whitewater trip, for example. And I haven’t taken the camera skiing. Yet. I’m wondering, though, if the right gear would make it doable.

@baldur Thank you. My original goal was dragonflies. There were quite a few that day, but none would sit still long enough. This heron was distracted by fish and far enough away that our encroachment went unnoticed.
