Although I watch The Rookie on ABC mostly for Nathan Fillion, the show is an excellent example of gaslighting in favor of the LAPD. I wouldn’t be surprised if the department is an executive producer of the show.

@pratik I really enjoy The Rookie, along with NCIS and some other similar shows. I think they all present their government organisations in best light. Shows that didn’t, or that challenged such organisations, probably wouldn’t be made or aired.
@Miraz Yup. Unfortunately. Perhaps they wouldn’t get access. But considering the current state of policing in the US, it’s laughable in a bad way.
@pratik But also, the reason we watch shows like that is so we can be reassured that the ‘goodies' will overcome the ‘baddies’. I'm conscious that I speak as a white female of considerable privilege. I'm also glad that nowadays such shows are at least a little 'diverse’.
@Miraz It’s no longer a case of few bad apples. It’s the systemic prejudice that’s to blame. Even non-white cops were found to espouse racist practices. It’s getting better but nowhere as rosy as what’s being depicted on these shows.
@pratik Yes. It's the systemic ‘ism’s of all kinds. I suspect we're still a very long time away from the possibility of light entertainment which reflects the realities of a society which preteneds to itself that it is something other than it really is. Meanwhile I celebrate that TV shows can now include women as important or even lead characters, that sometimes not-heterosexual people are included in positive ways. Those are a couple of things are are specifically relevant to me.
@pratik That's a shame. It's easily worth a years worth of the subscription and so much better than the majority of TV I have watched in the past 15 years.
@simonwoods tbh, we would subscribe in a heartbeat if we could only get the streaming. We want to stay away from the free shipping. Too much impulse buying happens.
@pratik Oh! That is an option here, they just call it "Prime Video". Although they make it much less obvious to find compared to Prime; unsurprising but a crappy practice nonetheless.
@simonwoods No such luck here or not that I am aware of. They want to push you for the all-inclusive subscription. There was some talk last year of offering a video-only option but guess it went nowhere.
@pratik Bleh. Classic Amazon, I guess. I just did a quick look around and this thing was funded by Amazon so it's a total mess... ugh.
If you ever get a chance to see the show you should definitely take it.
