The first thing that comes to my mind when I see or hear the word abate is that it was the first word in the GRE Verbal word list. This memory is nearly 20 years old but I doubt it’s different now.

PS. the second word was abeyance (hi @kaa)

@pratik I think I hear/see abatement used much more frequently than I do abeyance (I suppose because termites/mold/water/fire/etc)…
