A new beta of Mimi Uploader is out with a small but significant update. The alt text generation feature now uses the latest Open AI model (GPT-4o) announced yesterday.

@pratik @odd @DaveyCraney Thanks folks! It appears to be doing a better job but this is so subjective, it is hard to tell. It is definitely not doing worse. I'll likely let this sit in beta for a few weeks because it seems that they are still ramping up deployment, and while Mimi users are a small group, the rest of the world is all jumping on the new model the same time. I've seen some timeouts/errors in my testing but a second try usually works.
@samgrover I was just trying it out. The descriptions were accurate and quick to get. Do you envision an option to change the language of the alt text? For my German posts it would make sense to have German alt text.
@holgerfrohloff When I first launched this feature I had invited feedback on translation options but received no response. So thank you for sharing that. I do think it would be neat so I will have to look into how to accomplish this. Asking the generator to also translate may be now available, but the other options would be to offer a separate translation feature integrated into the same view.
@samgrover I’ve only used it once so far on a food picture, but it did really well,especially as the food was of dubious quality…it still got it correct and did a great description! I’m hoping to put up a Japan Diaries post this weekend which will be picture heavy, so I’ll give it a real good tyre kick for you then!
