@JohnPhilpin I like the idea that it's difficult to concentrate because reasons and yet their website threw a pop-up at me.
@JohnPhilpin Yeah I get that. However, I never have this issue with Micro.blog and the like. Given the big brave words being used to justify this new platform, I prefer to test them on the basis of not needing extra effort to simply visit. After all, what's the point in a new thing if it's just as inconsiderate as the old thing?
@SimonWoods total agreement .. which is why I wrote to him telling him that the experience of his new world is at odds with his words … and that within 5 minutes of me sharing the link … I had two people pointing this out.
Let’s see what he says.
@SimonWoods @johnphilpin I instantly didn’t like the limitation of 300 words. You should have the freedom to write whatever length you want, without having to potentially lose context or intent because of an arbitrary cutoff.
@pimoore and when I look in there are plenty of posts longer than 300 words - I think it’s like microblog - fixed number on home page and then expands on the click through
@JohnPhilpin Not yet sure what problem they're trying to solve apart from creating an alternative Twitter. At least the "engagement" things (likes, etc.) are private.
@pratik agree solution in search of a problem. But still / nice to see more people in the indie world
@pimoore OH - hang on - I have been reading '300 words' and understanding '300 characters' - which I guess is an indication of how programmed I have become .. thinking in terms of Twitter and Micro Blog character counts.
Well - 'Experiment 1' has failed.
The post is up ... see here
... except you can't see it - because I THINK you have to be logged on with my creds to do that.
It should be here or here ... but nada.
AND
912 - is that the number of posts to date?
AND
I can see the post in my Nicheless Blog drafts.
This hosting your own blog stuff is hard - right?
LATER
It all worked out in the ends ... log out - log in ...
The First Post Is Here and The Second Post Is Here ...
Next observation ... the URLs aren't my URLs ... even though I have a unique domain.
@JohnPhilpin Got the pop up too -- it takes over the entire screen by darkening everything else and you can't close it. I walk away from those things.
@alongtheray yeah - the writing on the wall is not good.
I get the same when i use 'less restricted settings' in a different browser.
I also wrote to him yesterday pointing this all out - and so far nothing back.
@jasonekratz I’ve always been one of those people who thinks that a customer is someone who pays you for your product / service. The thing about this one is that is totally free - with no public facing statement of how they build a sustainable business .. which is another warning flag and makes me think this is more of a vanity project than a real solution.
@Simonwoods @pimoore @crossingthethreshold
Heads up … mail from the Louis at Nicheless thanking me for highlighting the pop up issue .. and says he has now disabled all pop ups he could find .. in case you wanted to try it out again.
@JohnPhilpin How are they defining words? Does focus on words encourage using longer/fancier words in the spirit of eschew obfuscation
@pratik ‘a’ is a word … as is ‘Constantinople’ … and it seems to be a random number higher than 200 and lower than 400 🥹
@JohnPhilpin But under the condition that both posts should have 300 words.
