I’m getting concerned about the irrational hate for Apple on Micro.blog. Draconian, communist, etc. are some words thrown around. But love for Android is fine and dandy although Google is more of a threat in terms of privacy and end-user protection that I value more. Is diversity in ope... microblog.pratikmhatre.com

@pratik I was thinking along the same lines. It all has a grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side feel that simply isn’t the case.

@alanralph Yup. I don’t love them per se and it’s always contingent on what they are doign for me right now. At the same time, a company’s culture, principles, and its employees/founders behavior also matters. If that changes, I can choose to take my business elsewhere. E.g. E*on M@sk, I like the concept of electric cars and want to own one but will not buy a Tesla.

@Pilchuck It’s mostly about priorities. As a user (not a developer), I like that Apple protects my privacy and also makes my experience with their products and services joyful. If someone priorities clash with mine, I support their decision to abandon that platform. If many of them do it, Apple might change. If I don’t like that change, I’ll go elsewhere too.

@pratik I agree with you that irrational hate for a platform vendor has no place in a reasoned discussion of the relative pros and cons. There are always trade offs, and the main reason I ended up at Micro.blog is that I like the set of web-first design decisions which make it largely platform-agnostic.

@pratik @pimoore great post and I agree. You have to pick what is right for you. I had a similar dilemma with WhatsApp, I could not get family onto Signal or iMessage and had to give in. Even though, now they have improved their privacy, it has taken a long time to get there.

@cfristrom I love the web-first and open-source principles. Tht’s what attracted me to MB and still keeps me here. If it’s on any specific platform, I encourage them to use its native designs and I’m sure Android and other platforms also appreciate that. There are plenty of services on the other platforms that I wished were on my platform but none were as important as to make me switch.

@pimoore @mtt I was on Windows until 2009. Used it at work longer than that. I neither hate it nor despise Gates (my salary is paid in part by his Foundation) but I have enjoyed being on Apple. I was one of those “Mactards” but am more understanding now. I understand being a developer and being frustrated by App Store reviews and payment restrictions but everyone knew that going in. I fully support them leaving the platform or arguing for a middle ground but yes, comparisons to communism is definitely not helping.

@Munish @jmreekes Thanks and I just typed the post while I was in the doctor’s waiting room so hopefully didn’t come across as too angry coz I am not. I understand the dilemma about continuing to using some services just because some people we want to be in touch with are there. I deleted FB but I can’t delete WhatsApp (can’t function in India without it) even though I prefer not to use it so I keep my use on there to the minimum.
