@viticci
Depends on your interpretation of fun. Glad it seems to work for you.
Btw, Unwatched app is really good.

@viticci I so desperately want an opened-up version of iOS/iPadOS at this point. I genuinely don't get why people are arguing against that. Hopefully over time, everything that's better about the DMA version will truly inform what's possible/legislatable (is that a word?!) in other parts of the worldā€¦especially here in the U.S.!

@viticci the European Commission may not be a draconian entity that demands changes out of spite (for a particular corporation or otherwise), but itā€™s certainly not a group of elected officials, and whether they regulate based on what they believe is best for their constituents is VERY debatable ā€“ in the domain of tech policy as well as other policy areas.

Please donā€™t pitch this as democracy vs monopoly to bolster your argument.

@viticci fantastic take and an opinion I share.

Also lol at peopleā€™s reaction at times. I donā€™t get why some people feel personally attacked when a trillion dollar company gets put into place. Also, imagine arguing against more choice.

@viticci Iā€™m with you on this. Competition has barely even started with the App Store and already theyā€™ve opened it up to previously disallowed apps @delta and @utmapp.

So even my brother in Canada has a better #iPhone in his pocket thanks to the EC.

Who knows what will come next?

@jaredwhite @viticci

Imagine Spotify walked into a real life physical Apple Store and demanded that they be able to sell music there and pay for it using their own system and put their booth where ever they wanted in the store and hang any sign with any text on it wherever they want.

And that Apple should have no say whatsoever in any of this.

I mean they do have a monopoly over what happens in the storeā€¦ shouldnā€™t we be able to force them to let other vendors sell stuff in their store?

@philsplace @viticci Imagine Apple customers are unable to shop in any other retail store on the planet other than the Apple Store.

That's the actual analogy you should be reaching for here.

@viticci No, they are not, and no I will not come on. The Commissioners are nominated by governments and voted for by the European Parliament en bloc. But the wider point is: the struggle between the EU as a purely regulatory system and a full-fledged parliamentary democracy is as old as the Union itself ā€“ and it is closer to the former than the latter: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/. Dressing up the DMA as a democratic achievement or ā€œin the interest of EU citizensā€ is a lazy and misleading argument.

@viticci I agree, the EU is forcing Apple to return to its roots of being a hardware maker that should encourage developers to do better. I don't need the App Store to be the gatekeeper that keeps malware off of my phone, I want it to be the baseline that other stores have to surpass.

Less spirit of Sales, more spirit of hackers with taste, please.

@philsplace @jaredwhite @viticci the analogy you are looking for is if Mercedes only let you buy aftermarket stuff at a Mercedes dealer, you were expressly forbidden to let any other shop service your car. No off-brand tires, no replacing the entertainment system, and so on. Third party mechanics cannot buy the special tools needed, and so on.

@viticci oh the other hand EU users don't have weather alerts, object recognition, News, Fitness in photos, (iOS 18) remote iPhone control, AI (and probably some more).

@viticci I agree with most of this, but not that Apple is doing a good job. They're trying pretty hard to make the EU version as unattractive as possible, "Core Technology Fee" and all.

@fnordius @jaredwhite @viticci

More important to this conversationā€¦ Jared said ā€œI genuinely don't get why people are arguing against that.ā€

I tried to provide an analogy that would help him understand.

Insisting that some people donā€™t feel like that is what is happening is why he canā€™t understand them, imhoā€¦ even if he, or you, donā€™t agree. They still feel that way.
