@the So sad to read about the quad bikes killing a banded dotterel down in Kaikoura. We have those dotterels on our beach too, though I don't think they breed here. Quad bikes (and 2 wheeled motorbikes) have been a menace on our beach and we've had a lot of concern for the birds that breed and / or feed here. Luckily at the moment it's harder for vehicles to get onto our beach.

@Miraz It’s saddening & maddening! (Glad to hear things have improved at your beach.)

@Miraz There really needs to be a better way of keeping vehicles off beaches where ground-nesting birds are. If people who drive on the beach were all genuinely careful and avoided the birds it might be OK. But too many of them are just hooning around and doing all the damage.

@pkboi The whole vehicles on the beach thing has been a HUGE issue here for the last few years, in part because nature eroded the only access for vehicles here a few years back. It's been incredibly contentious and nasty, ripping the community apart. Those desperate to take their motor vehicles on the beach have carried out all sorts of destructive and illegal acts.

@Miraz I’ve noticed that. Whenever someone suggests banning vehicles from the beach there is a huge backlash in the media.
