Started to look at new televisions and I’m very out of touch with current pricing it seems. I’m assuming the AUD exchange rate also has something to do with the higher prices. There needs to be a search function on sites though for “not a google tv”.

@peterw If you’re looking for a Dumb TV, then about the only brand you can look at is Sceptre. We got a 55” 4K panel for US$350 two years ago. It’s not great, but it doesn’t have any “smarts” inside and works great with our Apple TV and soundbar. I’m sure they have better models now, and prices continue to drop.

@tylerknowsnothing thanks! I know I can disable everything but I’m trying to remove google from my life and it’s frustrating when they ship with rubbish you don’t want. It’s a trade off.

@peterw Oh, I definitely hear you. The nice thing about Apple TV, however, is a nice conduit to our Plex server :) Even a cheap mini PC would act as a great media server. I hope you’ll find a good combo of gear :)

@tylerknowsnothing I have a Mac mini running my plex server and use my Apple TV to connect to it and streaming services. Beginning to think I might have to disappoint my nephew who is expecting to get the 7yr old hand me down!

@peterw We got one of the older 4K models used for our daughter and that only cost us about $60-70. That’s always an option :) I think hers is the 32GB model while our newer one is a 64GB. We got it for her earlier this year, too, so I’m hoping that price range is still valid.
