This list is at least the third “best sci-fi/fantasy of 2022” list I have seen recently that is heavily weighted toward the latter category. That’s fine. I’m not personally a huge fan of most fantasy fiction, but I’ve got no problem with it. It does make me wonder two things, though. ... explodingcomma.com

@petebrown When I'm hunting for sci-fi I find it really annoying to have to wade through fantasy, and horror, for that matter. Just the sci-fi for me, please.

@petebrown If they are going to lump them together, they should just drop both labels and call it "speculative fiction". I know that doesn't help you or @Miraz - it doesn't help me either, because I'm generally trying to avoid the sci-fi for the more fantastical (not necessarily "fantasy").

It's a bit of a continuum. N.K. Jemisin, for example, writes both, and so did Theodore Sturgeon. And what's Star Wars?

I've found the best way to find what I want is to identify interesting publishing houses and authors, and follow them.

@MultoGhost Yeah, it’s less about discovery for me than interest in why and how fantasy has come to dominate the speculative genres, and to a lesser degree, why the industry continues to lump it all together.
