Bought my first raspberry pi! Pretty excited to start experimenting with it. Although once it came in I realized I need a microSD for it’s hard drive!

@herself A couple of things I want to play with and any that work really well will cause me to buy more, because I’d have 3 specific use cases. 1) A Home Bridge server that can supplement Apple HomeKit by connecting to non-compatible smart home devices. 2) Building a “Magic Mirror” and using this as the computer behind it. 3) Use it as a portable Linux server to supplement programming on my iPad.
@EddieHinkle Finishing up a project right now with one! I am so amazed at what a capable computer you can get for ~$30!
@EddieHinkle I use mine as a media and backup server. Runs silently and cool. I keep thinking about downsizing to a Raspberry Pi Zero, but they’re only 32 bit, so I worry about ongoing support. The thumb drive is used to regularly RSync the SD card in case of corruption.
@herself Haha not talking... at least not yet. It’s called a magic mirror but it’s more a smart mirror: pictures from the original guy who did it here: http://michaelteeuw.nl/post/84026273526/and-there-it-is-the-end-result-of-the-magic
@Burk I know! I held it up to show my wife and said “this was $10” and she said “I would have thought it was $200!”
@oyam Without an OS? 🤨 I plugged it into power and hdmi and I didn’t see anything appear on the screen 😕
@EddieHinkle oh yeah!! I've seen this before. Awesome! Please do post pics of this if you do it. I'm so intrigued :)
@EddieHinkle You're right... I forgot you first have to enable USB boot (which also enabled PXE boot), and you need a microSD card for that. Too bad they don't enable that option out of the box. (https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/bootmodes/net_tutorial.md)
@EddieHinkle This is only for 3B+ (2018) models. The older ones do need micro SD even when network booting.
