Well, there’s one for the books… SmugMug acquires Flickr. I fell out of love with both services a while ago, but SmugMug is the right company to bring Flickr back to life.
@Sylari This was ages ago (10-15 years) ... it just didn’t fit or have the features I thought I wanted at the time. And back in the day nothing could beat free (ie. Flickr). I’ve had an active account there on and off for about 3 years. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about the company, service, or community, though.
@Sylari As for business history, they started as family business (father and son) out of their house and built things up from there. Chris MacAskill, the dad, is also a very interesting character worth checking out.
@oyam Still blowing my mind that 10-15 converts to years 2008-2003, frontier Internet. Good to hear.
Looks like I might have to at least stage an account there for transfer and to get used to their service. I hope they offer non-Yahoo changes for accounts eventually.
@Sylari on SmugMug itself they always had no ads policy and strong emphasis on privacy. I don’t think that’ll change, but it might get take some time. Flickr is no small beast to tame, it’s huge, old, and very neglected.
