I met a person in their early 40s who has a pension. I am shocked that anyone still has one.

@jdm I worked in local government for 8 years and will get a very small pension (less than $900 a month) -- was also a union gig!

@tracydurnell that's incredible! Happy to hear they haven't been fully killed off. Maybe there's hope for a return.

@jdm @tracydurnell If I have understood correctly, it’s mostly Reagan’s fault that it turned out that way. Most people need to eat, and to sleep under a roof even after they have retired. Tracy, I certainly hope that’s not all you have to live on after retirement!

@odd haha, as a nice twist, Social Security reduces your payments if you get a pension 🤦‍♀️ So yeah, that is probably all I'll be getting from the government. I'm saving a lot on my own! I'd rather have a guaranteed annuity-like income but hopefully I'll save enough / the stock market holds 🤷‍♀️

@tracydurnell I’m sorry to hear that. Privatisation of our common fortunes has come a long way over here too, but I think the right wing parties are going to have a hard time breaking up unions, and destroying people’s pensions. I have a small pittance coming my way from insurance, but if something happens to my, (also small) pension, I will have to live in the forest or something.

@odd 🙃 living in the forest is nice for a few days of vacation but not ideal as a retirement plan -- hopefully your pension will hold 🤞🤞🤞 Wish we all didn't have to worry about this.
