All packed for our vacation and ready to head out in an hour. Surprisingly, we have plenty of space in our luggage, which almost makes me think we are forgetting something. We are not even checking in any bags. It’s all carry-ons between the three of us ✈️

@pratik This level of strategic packing needs to become a dedicated Youtube channel.

@annahavron My family of 3 lived out of 3-4 carry ons + 2 backpacks for 4 months, AMA.

@KimberlyHirsh 🤯....so many questions...

Seriously, my biggest struggle is with shoes. Foot problems, therefore none of my shoes are small or flexible, nor can I go barefoot for long. I usually end up with 1 pr hiking shoes, 1 pr clogs, 1 pr sandals. I wear the heaviest, and try to cram the others in somehow.

And then there's the coffee making stuff, travel-oriented, which still takes up valuable space. I can go without alcohol, but not without morning caffeine. Though if I know coffee is available in the room, that doesn't have to come with me.

What were you most surprised that you could live without?

@KimberlyHirsh @annahavron Yeah! We (the 2 of us) spent four months with 2 carry on backpacks. No issues, loved it. Best way to travel. @pratik

@maique Do you remember the backpack volume? Just wondering what’s the most practical for such an extensive trip. 🎒

@odd I can check tomorrow, but 40L? Maximum allowed on most airlines. Plenty of room.

@maique Yes, I would think so. Especially if the weather isn’t all over the place where you are going.

@odd That was the thing. We were spending time on mostly warm climate countries for the duration. We did buy something for the rain, and a sweater. But just when we needed. No point in carrying that around. One pair of boots only, and sandals on the backpack for travel days.

Two backpacks in a bench that says “Cambodia”.

@maique Those Osprey’s looks practical. I’d love one with a flask holder too. I’ve been on a short hiking trip in the mountains in Norway, and then I had a 65L backpack, which was almost too small, because of all the recommended hiking gear. (It can be 25°C plus one hour, and a subzero blizzard the next (worst case)).

@odd They are super nice. Read a bunch of reviews before picking these up, and they were truly perfect. We’ve travelled a lot more and still have these.

Plenty of room when you’re not dealing with your kind of temperatures.

@odd @maique I did a bunch of travel with a GoRuck GR1 (the GR2 may be better suited for it). It’s expensive but so well made.

@annahavron I only took 2 pairs of shoes, both boots. Wore one, shoved socks & underwear in the other. Definitely would be a different situation if I'd needed more shoe space. But I roll clothes rather than folding, which is huge. Also, I was staying exclusively in AirBnBs, all of which had their own coffee setups.

@annahavron As for what I was surprised I could live without, I don't know. I had meds, clothes, an e-reader, tablet, laptop, and phone. Shoes, raincoat, light down coat. Toiletries. The only things I thought about bringing but didn't were more warm layers and actual books. I'm never a heavy packer, so I basically pretended I was going to the beach for a winter week. Oh and we did a LOT of laundry. That's the actual secret to traveling this way.

@maique @annahavron @pratik At the end we had one suitcase that was just for toys. A very different sort of travel with a kid rather than just 2 adults.

@KimberlyHirsh This all sounds very do-able.
