@odd I'm amazed by this phone so far. It is a giant leap over my Pixel 4.

@joelhamill I haven’t paid too much attention to the Pixel phones as I’m deeply invested in the Appleverse, but at the same time, I could see myself switching at some point.

@odd @joelhamill I've got a Pixel 6 XL and I'm a huge fan. Pixel is, by far, the best line of Android phones on the market.

@odd not to get into another os battle ... serious question

if you are 'deeply invested in the Appleverse'

what/why would it take to make the move - since you write that you

could see myself switching at some point.

@lmika @joelhamill I do have a Samsung S8 as a backup phone, but I can’t say that I love it. Then there are all the Samsung specific apps and services. If I get a new Android phone, it will be a Google one.

@JohnPhilpin Apple: More closed off architecture / proprietary solutions. Google: Better privacy options.

@odd @lmika Indeed. The thing that originally drew me to the Nexus line of phones before the Pixel line of phones was that they did not have all the "extra" cruft from the manufacturer. It was simply Android as Google wanted Android to behave

The one phone that drew me away was the Moto X, but that was primarily because I could customize the phone hardware to look how I wanted to - white front and royal blue back to match the colors of the Kansas City Royals.

@dave That’s a good situation to be in! Now that I have a iPhone 13 mini, I do have room in my pocket for a Pixel 8 mini. :-)

@odd I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 way back in the day. It was the best Android phone on the market back in 2014, but it was full of Samsung’s cruddy apps and terrible UI sensibility, which were a huge turn-off. I went to the Nexus line soon after that.

@lmika Yep, my experience too. Even such things as the SIM pin sometimes appearing before the phone lock code.

@odd @lmika Samsung's OneUI has improved a lot though. Even on hardware front, they provide brilliant screens and cameras. Their S22 line up is a good example, one I own currently. If you can ignore some apps they include, they add a good deal to Android ecosystem.

@amit They do have some decent hardware. I wish one could opt out of the apps and services that they have totally, and also that one could have a native Google backup solution. I don’t know if this even is on the Pixel.

@odd There is a native Google backup solution that you can enable. Not sure if you meant some other form of backup.

Even though Samsung does have an alternative service, it is not intrusive on flagships. After the initial where you reject all (just like I did for iPhone and apps like stocks etc), they are hardly seen. Of course, Pixel would be a cleaner experience -- just after sales service from Google, especially outside of US, is questionable. So I stick to Samsung.

@JohnPhilpin No, I meant the opposite - if they get that, then that, (in addition to Apple getting more proprietary) could lead me to switch.

@odd aaahhh ... so if Apple does this .... AND Google does that .... THEN the switch.
