I was reminded about the post on streaming apps by John Siracusa when I was browsing Apple Maps today. Do you know that after a search, it takes three taps to dismiss the sidebar, reveling the actual thing I want to see — the map? Do these taps count as “engagement”? 😒

@lmika Sometimes I wonder if the people who make the apps are using them when not forced to. I mean, Maps is such a common thing to need for looking up places, when you’ve done it a couple of times (RL), it’s not hard to find possible optimizations. 🥴

@odd Yeah, I think it's a little bit of that, a little bit of neglect (first tap was to dismiss the keyboard so I could actually get to the widget that closes the sidebar, which feels like a bug), and prioritising the wrong thing (the sidebar has recommendations like of places to eat, see, and stay; and it feels like the app wants to steer the user towards interacting with this over the map itself). Could also be me. 🙂
