Just finished a 14 hour shift. No one is apply for jobs. I have talked to so many other managers and business people in all kinds of businesses and everyone says the same thing. It’s not just a hospitality thing, it’s a no one is applying thing.

@hawaiiboy Find a ‘Immigrants are stealing our jobs’ group on Facebook and post job openings there.

@pratik 😂 Good thinking! However, there’s been a study on immigration in my home country, and it concluded, (among other things), that (in addition to other, positive effects), a quantity of low-wage jobs has been taken over by immigrants, and forced the most unemployable citizens out of the job market. This is of course, among those citizens, a reason to join such groups, and if there are too many of them forced out, it could lead to sizable and dangerous racism. So something has to be done, but I don’t think stopping immigration is one of them.

@odd not starving is a right, having a job is not.

@hjertnes That’s true. And it may also be true that everyone wasn’t starving before either. Loss of a job isn’t easy, and especially if the expectancy would be that you won’t be able to get another one. A job don’t only mean a steady and better income than to rely on social services. It also mean a place of belonging, and having an answer to the common question: What do you do (for a living). Personally I don’t think I would have any problems getting a job even now, after many years outside of the job market. But I have an education, and could be willing to take almost anything. For a person that have almost no education beyond elementary school, that have been having low-paying jobs all of his/her life, and that also are approaching middle age, you can’t compete with young and eager employees. We as educated people that would never face the same challenges as those people, mustn’t just give up on them so easily. Everyone deserves a fair chance. (And a second one).

@odd Definitely but then have to remain open to solutions without screaming socialism! I'm like, well, enjoy your unfettered capitalism and don't complain when the free market weeds you out.
