Today I learned about flushing my local cache - not the browser, not the remote server, not the network.

I know - right! Who knew!

How could I have never hit this problem before? Still, all good - all working

Many thanks to WPMUDEV support.

They really are rather good!

@Munish @odd

well - you did ask ……

i had set up a new site everything was running and swimming and BOOTYFUL.
i thought to myself - see - i can do it.
plugins rocking, images - roll over hovering ...
i had it all
clicked on save and …
hung ..
instant reaction - swear at ISP
go to another site - refresh - working
phew - temporary glitch - back to site i was working on
nada
flush browser cache.
nada
go to other sites - all working.
opened up a different browser
nada
opened up mars edit - that I had already connected - no connection can be made.
i was at a loss.
rebooted machine - zippo.
that one site was not playing ball.
and so I open up a chat with my friendly hosting company
he sent me a screen shot of my working site.
try a different browser .... etc
try a different machine … nope
ok - can you plug in to a different network
ummm - this is a house - we don’t have ‘spare networks’ …
how about camping on a phone hotspot?
went to phone and there was the site
yes - he said - you are going to have to flush your local cache …
que?
i can send you instructions
and i am sure he did - but before they arrived my browser decided to close down.
it is clearly one of those days
... but
well - it cant be that hard - can it?
so i did a quick duck duck go - and found a number of articles, but this is the one you want if like me you are on Big Sur.

Read It Here

The sudo is different on earlier versions.

here's what i do not understand.

my ipad on the same wireless network - ALSO could not see the site in that testing.

the cache i flushed was on the MAC

after that - my ipad could see the site awell.

why my iPad understands the Mac DNS is well beyond my pay grade - and will wait until the next time i hit a similar problem, before i wrestle that one down to the ground.

hope that helps.

@JohnPhilpin Thank you for a thorough explanation! Networking is not my forte, whether interpersonal or with computers. Why flushing the DNS cache on your Mac also fixed the problem on your iPad is beyond me. Maybe it’s the pixies?
