I’m going down the Synology rabbit hole. Ordered a DS423+ with 2 Toshiba N300 10TB drives to start with. I’ve also got some additional RAM and NVMe en route. My primary use will be ChannelsDVR (Plex-like), but I’m sure I’ll find more and more uses for it. Anyone else using one?

@numericcitizen What do you use it for? Storage and backup or more?

For me, I’m thinking:

  • ChannelsDVR
  • Homebridge
  • Pihole. Maybe.

@Mtt I use it mainly to store backups, archives of my YouTube videos production, a running version of my old WordPress site. It's my internal DNS for my small homelab too.

@Mtt been using Synology for...years... Right now I'm on one of the 12 bay ones, with another 12 bay expansion unit. ...I might have a problem... 🤣

@lostinhaste Insert its-a-trap.gif here.

Any suggested packages/apps to run? Currently I just have Channels (similar to Plex) and Homebridge.

@Mtt Docker is amazing...I highly recommend you look into that and while Synology's docker interface is ok, Portainer is how I manage my Docker stuff. Both Marius Hosting and Noted have a lot of good info about Docker / Apps. I could give you a list of recommended apps but it really depends on what you want to do with your server, so as always and ever will be, the answer is: "it depends".

@lostinhaste I have Container Manager installed and have started attempting to work through it all.

@Mtt ohhh, good luck! 🎉 That's how I started! One app I will recommend, other than Portainer, is Homepage; it let's you set up bookmarks with custom data feeds, such as how much space you have on your server or what's going on with Plex or Channels.

@lostinhaste I've got Portainer setup. Although I haven't yet been able to figure out how to enable https on it (I'm using Tailscale). The first package I installed was FreshRSS, and I was able to get it working and authenticated in third party apps. I'm using Homebridge too.

  • I'd love a basic IMGUR replacement (Chevereto and photo backup apps are more feature-rich than I want).
  • A youtube-dl frontend with some sort of auto-delete feature.
  • I might go for the "arr" app suite but figuring that out right now is giving me a headache.

I'm having fun with the process so far. Trying to balance learning Docker with maintaining proper security right now.

@Mtt wow, you’re already ahead of me… 😉 I never bothered with https, I looked into it but it was just so much work that I ended up segregating Portainer / DSM access onto their own vlan segment. I did end up getting Overseerr set up using Cloudflare Tunnels, which gives family the ability to see / request stuff over port 443. (Yes, I know I’m a bad developer / geek, not wrapping everything over TLS… 🤣)

The ”arr” apps are pretty dang amazing, especially the way they all interact with each other but yes, I agree, they can be a headache to set up but once you do…perfection.

@lostinhaste I installed the -arrs and got them humming along but I started to have an insane amount of threat protection alerts. Gotta learn how real those threats are to move forward.

I did end up getting a public facing PrivateBin up and running though.

Learning more every day.

@lostinhaste I've got the -arrs working finally. I'm loving it! Any chance you have any indexer invites?

@Mtt yea...the only one I have exposed to the broader Net is Overseerr and that's behind Cloudflare protection; everything else, if I need it outside the house, I just remote in through my firewall with Wireguard.

@Mtt yuppers, I have some invites but I'm not sure how you'd get me an address to use to send the invite...also, the one I have access to use, there are some pretty stringent rules around it...

@lostinhaste I ended up with Privatebin (lots of Micro.blog tech support) in a Cloudflare Tunnel as well as a Media Downloader in a password protected Tunnel. For everything else, I use Tailscale.

@lostinhaste I’m still new to it, so if an invite is a headache to work out, no worries on that.

I used to have a Synology 210+ but got a QNAP TVS 473e with the Ryzen APU for the extra oomph to do DevOps practice in VMs and containers.
NixOS in the LXDs are my jam.
