I've been looking at #analytics providers, and I don't get why they limit on pageview numbers. It's so arbitrary.

Like, it's double the price for the difference between 10k and 100k visits, but we're actually just talking about a couple more MB of data in a database somewhere.

It's bollocks. Why can't there be a provider that's like "yeah, it's $5/m for whatever visits you get. It's all the same to us."

(there may be a such a provider, but I'm not aware of them)

@kev Self hosted Umami works very well, with a nice interface and is GDPR compliant out of the box.

@kev I am no businessman, but I reckon it’s not the couple MB, but the value the service brings that you’re paying for.

@kev I’m running Umami for 3 websites via PikaPods for just ~$1.5/month with no stat limits and love it!

@kev Not related in any way with the project, but they offer a free service based on donations and the project seems cool.

@circafuturum @kev It looks indeed great. For the record, I am not using it (I currently use tinylytics.app) but if I need to do something with analytics again I will try it for sure. I liked what I saw when I was looking into the topic a few weeks ago.

@alexsaezm @kev same position for me as well now: next time I need analytics, will very likely try it out too

@kev it's probably the processing needed rather than the data storage. I.e. if they have a script sitting somewhere that gets probed every time a page is hit, giving it the data needed to process and store, then a website hitting that script maybe once every few minutes is going to use fewer resources than a website hitting it hundreds of times a second.

It's basically the same issue you were having with Mastodon hammering your site every time you posted a link to it.

@ChowWiWang there's no referral. I want them so I can understand where traffic is coming from, rather than the numbers.

@alexsaezm yeah, I actually remember GoatCounter after posting this and have set it up with them. If I decide to stick with it, I'll support them on GitHub.

Yeah, our Azure bills for Log Analytics from App Insights will happily tell me it's not just a few MB difference, nor £5/m :(

@kev just throwing something into the void, but it memory serve me right then matomo.org/ is what you are looking for. They are about ethical statistics ✌️😊

@RyuKurisu I’ve run Matomo in the past. It’s way more than I need and is a very heavy application. I’ve setup GoatCounter, gonna see how that goes for a few days in terms of tracking referring sites. If it’s of little value, I’ll get rid.

@zhaph @flori Context is key though. What are “our azure bills”? The company you work for, or a simple personal site with, I dunno, 50k visits/month (total guess as I have no idea).

The company I work for generates petabytes of logs every day. That’s a different ballgame and not what I was referring to.

@kev
True enough, but orders of magnitude of page views will have at least that impact on your log generation and processing as well. It's unlikely to be *just* a couple of MB in a database somewhere ;)
