@moonmehta What you should really read instead of my microposts are my more thoughtful longform blogs on space and all else. You can subscribe to them directly via email or RSS, natch: jatan.space/subscribe

I do auto-share their posts to as many social networks as possible via RSS + dlvr.it but good luck coming across them in the noisy, ad-riddled, algorithmically-twisted, influencer-influenced feeds of social media.

@moonmehta why trouble? Don’t you just set it up and it happens?

@moonmehta I empathize with the low signal to noise ratio on social media, and the web, frankly. With generative AI this only is going to get worse. I’m looking at you, Drew Ortiz of Sports Illustrated šŸ˜‰

@JohnPhilpin Micro.blog’s crossposting sometimes misses posts so you always need to check if each post did get posted everywhere you set it up to. Micro.blog doesn’t notify you if any crossposting failed. Sometimes you also need to check if crossposts retained all links appropriately depending on each destination platform’s character limits. In case you make a typo or mistake, you then need to edit manually everywhere. And of course, you also need to monitor replies on each platform you crosspost to. Overall I feel it defeats the purpose of set and forget. And so instead, I think Mastodon’s integration into Micro.blog is a route that makes a lot more sense than crossposting. Because then you just deal with posting, editing, and replying here.

@BenSouthwood What about your experiences with crossposting makes you say that?

@renevanbelzen Exactly. I wrote in a recent post that ā€generative AI has added a fourth dreaded dimension to misinformation, one not just of publishing misinformation at an unprecedented rate but so via authentic-seeming false identities.ā€

I think this may be asking too much of yourself. Focus on a couple of platforms where you will reply. Rest can be broadcast only. If those platforms have the ability to send you an email for those comments, you would possibly go back to reply (once a day/week?) otherwise don’t bother.

@BenSouthwood Makes sense. I sometimes wouldn’t publish Micro.blog related posts because it would get crossposted everywhere. I didn’t want to keep disabling crossposting every such time and then re-enable it later, and often tended to forget that crossposting destinations can be disabled on a per-post basis too.

@jasonekratz Indeed. POSSE works well for me when the auto-shared posts are just a link to the original, and show the title for context, but that clearly doesn’t work for microposts.

@pratik Fair point. I did try to enable emails for new comments on some socials I used to crosspost to but it interfered with the way I use email. But checking some platforms less frequently can be done.

@moonmehta you’re likely right. I might need to investigate the ease of micro.blog’s ActivityPub service… I’m so used to IceCubes letting me do things the easy way but maybe the mobile client is good these days too? šŸ¤”

(I also have a 1337 character limit elsewhere too. šŸ˜‰)

@moonmehta well there is that .. most of which I don’t bother about because my follower (sic) on each service can probably work it out 🄳

That said I do look forward to the day we can choose the single source of truth that the writer prefers and as they edit that source … the changes are duly syndicated.

Breath definitely not held so I can be wonderfully surprised when it happens.

@JohnPhilpin That would make me reconsider crossposting. Though not holding my breadth either.
