Coldplay’s latest album, Everyday Life is easily the most musically interesting album since Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends in 2008. On first listen today, I had no idea where it was going—totally unpredictable.

@pyrmont I’d like to know what you thought! I don’t think that it will be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s certainly varied.

@martinfeld I can imagine it might be one of those albums that rewards careful listening. Having had it on in the background a couple of times since my original message, I'd say few if any of the songs really cut through at all. I'd probably rate it currently as my least favourite of their albums. You?

@pyrmont You’re absolutely right; it requires close attention. It has less of an anthemic style than their other albums and some of the recordings seem to be outside a traditional studio set-up, so you have to concentrate on stuff. I had to wait for a quiet moment to listen to it.

I’ve enjoyed all of their albums but find that Everyday Life feels more genuine (or has less of a laboured theme) than albums like Mylo Xyloto and Ghost Stories. Those include great songs but seem to be yelling, ‘This is what this album is about!’ (e.g. the accompanying comics or stories about Gwyneth). For this one, it seems like they weren’t afraid to simply mix up the styles and challenge the idea of what a Coldplay album should sound like.
