As we bid adieu to iPod, here’s my little collection shelf at home; discover more (along with other topics) on episode 058 of @HemisphericViews. 🎵🙂

@martinfeld Beauties 😍 My sister had the very first iPod and I was late to the game with the first ever shuffle (being my first iPod)... even had the lanyard. Good times! Loved the little toggle at the back.

@vincent Oh it’s pretty cool that you started with the first shuffle! What did you like most about the device? Did you enjoy the lack of a screen?

@ChrisJWilson Thanks very much! There are certainly others who have more extensive collections but I’m pleased with it.

Unfortunately and funnily enough, Designed by Apple in California does not fit on any shelf known to humankind (even the small version).

@martinfeld The first Shuffle was my first iPod. The funny thing about these devices is I took what went onto my devices more seriously. I would rate everything coming into my library, so only 4 & 5 star songs would get though. Further, I would use smart lists to filter out anything played in the last day or so. Now, I just let Apple Music do its thing. I kinda miss the old way.

@skoobz You make a fantastic point: these devices were much more deliberate and focused; we’re spoilt by even more convenience and choice now.

I culled the number of songs in my Apple Music library last year when I found that things had become bloated due to somewhat compulsive additions. Have you found that your library has expanded since the shift away from iTunes?

@martinfeld Apple says the watch is their most personal device but I’d argue that it was my first, original iPod.

@gregmoore I think that's a fair argument. The Apple Watch is personal in the sense that you wear it and customise its appearance, but the iPod was personal in the sense that you had to make very conscious choices about the music that you could fit in it.

@martinfeld The iPod was also personal in that it was filled with nothing but your stuff that you added to accompany you. I still have my old iPods because each one feels like a beloved notebook that I filled.

The Apple watch, on the other hand, I sold off because it was too personal and invasively pushing stuff from other people.

@martinfeld Not sure about that. What’s happened to me most is I almost never listen to albums anymore and I live within pre-curated playlists. I’ll try diving into albums for a minute, only to get lazy and go back to Music playlists again.

@martinfeld I love that shelf. Makes me really miss my iPod Classic. I wish I never sold it 🥹. Do you still use any of these? I saw a really cool iPod Classic rejuvenation post recently that I would've loved to try.
