Not a day goes by that I’m not grateful to work with the people at 1Password. It’s a great team comprised of wonderful, kind, intelligent, and funny people.

@mangochutney It's a great app. Thank you. However, while I have used 1Password since version 3, I have been wondering how to extract the information in 1Password if at some point in the future, I need to move to another app.

@khurtwilliams you can always export your data out of the app using the CSV or 1PIF format. I recommend using both but relying on 1PIF. It’s JSON-based and gives the app you’re importing into a clearer field labels, data association and meta data.

@mangochutney thansk for that. Is the JSON consumable by other apps in practice or just in theory? In other words, can I import the 1PIF into Lastpass or Dashlane?

@khurtwilliams sorry, only just saw that. It’s very mich useable in almost all apps, as far I as know. That’s the beauty of a proper export format.

@kulturnation no problem. If you keep an export file around, make sure it’s somewhere very safe because it’s not encrypted.

@kulturnation makes sense. If you have solid encryption on that thing, go for it. Alternatively you can also export stuff into into a local 1Password vault and save that somewhere. That’s encrypted, the data format is openly documented, and there are third party tools to open it.

@mangochutney excellent. My 1Password database is backed up but I think I want a JSON file as backup as well.

@khurtwilliams just remember to keep that file somewhere sage as it’s nit encrypted. And just like I told kulturnation, the data format for the regular local vaults is openly documented, so you will be able to open them even if 1Password ever disappears.
