🎖 Small victory for today: I did manage to FTP all the photos to the Ghost install on PikaPods. It seems to be working.

Still have to deal with Mailgun (do I though?), and move the domain to PikaPods, but dinkiwinkiminkiwinki might have found a new home.

@maique I'm gonna have you write up a how-to or at least a general guide

@pratik Surprisingly (or maybe not), it was a very straightforward affair.

I will write it up, but here’s the gist:

There is an export feature on the settings, where you grab a json file with the data (posts, pages, etc), and then it was just a matter of importing that into the new install. Easy, and the blog is already working, with no photos.

Ghost(Pro) has an incredible support staff, they sent over a zipped file with the whole thing.

It was just a matter of firing up the FTP client, logging into my new Ghost install, and upload the 5GB into the correct folder (hint: it’s called “images”) 🙂

Done.

@maique Were you also using Ghost at dinkiwinkiminkiwinki?

@pratik Yes, yes, this is a Ghost to Ghost migration. The service they provide at Ghost(Pro) is really great, but rather expensive if you just want to host a non-profit, simple, blog. At least in my opinion.

I’m just trying to bring the cost down from $11/month to around $2-3.

@maique That's true. I've never used Ghost bhut looks great for a pro blog. So you mean, you moved from Ghost Pro to self-hosted dinkiwinkiminkiwinki or vice versa?

@pratik Ghost(Pro) to PikaPods. Not entirely self-hosted, but close to it.

Tomorrow I’ll double check to make sure everything is working perfectly, and move the domain over.

PikaPods offers $5 when you sign up, enough for at least a couple of months, if you want to test any of the apps you can install.

@jasonekratz I know! That’s why I’m moving away from the mothership, and into a new place at PikaPods.

It’s been going for a couple of days, no issues. I beefed up the resources a bit (thanks for the tip, @pcora), and it still has a bit of RAM to spare.

I’m looking at $2.65/month. Not bad at all.

@jasonekratz Same kind of readership 😅 I get a couple of visitors whenever I publish a new post, but this one is still a gift to my wife, it can take months for a new post to show up.

@maique, I have to look into PikaPods a bit, but from what I read, it's like managed hosting with installers, right?

@pratik Yes. Not entirely self-hosting, not fully managed. A good compromise, if you ask me. You pick your configuration (cpu, ram, ssd) just like on a vps for self-hosting, but they take care of OS updates, app updates, you see none of that.

But still have ftp access, and a few other niceties.

@maique Cool. Coz I don't want to get back into self-hosting. It can be fun but a time suck.

@pratik Indeed! I was trying to avoid that too, again. That’s why I found this a viable option, sort of middle ground. I don’t expect it will need any intervention from me.

@pratik The pod will start with a predefined setup (hence the difference in cost they show when you’re picking the app to install). In my case it was lower than what I have now, and @pcora jumped in with a suggestion. It seems to work (and it’s over the initial RAM).

I suppose a search online for something like “minimum specs for X app when setting up VPS” would be a good start.

Kagi would probably excel at this 😅😂

@maique

I have much, much less content than you on my new Ghost blog on PikaPods, but right now I’m at 500 mhz, 1 gb memory, 50 gb storage. Probably could tweak the storage down.

There are some great blogs out there from @chrishannah that I used to set up some RSS routing, but for now I’m just sticking with Micro.blog for my short posts.

@bryan You probably could yes. Mine feels a bit slower than the one at Ghost(Pro), but still ok.
