Follow-up to yesterday’s post: Adam Fusco and I had a bit of a test of this over at social.lol. Turns out when you send a private message, the reply defaults to being private as well. This also applies to replies of replies. Private messages can’t be boosted either. Good to know.

@lmika It's scary! I have a separate app that I use for this alone. It has a separate tab for messages, I know they'll be private there. Always afraid I'll forget to pick the correct setting if using the official app!

@maique Oh yeah, I can understand that. I wouldn’t use it for anything completely private, and to Mastodon’s credit, the do warn you about this when you set the message to private. For me it was the only possible venue to send the message I wanted to send (well, maybe not the only; I probably could have used email, but immediacy was a bit of a factor as well).

@lmika Yes, agreed. Sometimes we’re just replying back and forth, and I want to say something “privately”, and it’s as convenient as it gets. That’s it 🙂 For the nuclear codes I’ll pick another app 🙂

@maique 😄 Yes, one hopes that those who know the nuclear codes will as well.
