Simone

Woke up today and saw a post on a lovely hyper local newspaper we have in town, about a street art piece by mano.jmk.

Simone de Oliveira is one of the greatest singers in the country (she recently retired), and the street artist is her grandson.

Went there.

@maique Looks like a professional local news paper! I love those. Is it free to read or subscribed? I hit no paywall.

@ndreas Itā€™s brilliantly made, by a few very good journalists, with decades of experience in more traditional newspapers. No paywall, I believe, although you can contribute to the project.

@maique Heā€™s clearly a great artist himself. Strange how the best singers smoke. Nat King Cole, probably the best male voice ever smoked like a chimney. I recently quit myself, thatā€™s why Iā€™m not on the Billboard Top 40. šŸ˜‰

@maique That's fantastic. Is it all about Lisboa? And covers politics, culture and news in general? Is it online only or also on paper? How are they making money?

@ndreas It is, really. Of course the names of the journalists mean nothing to you, but they are really great ones, references in the country.

Itā€™s all about Lisbon. You can try to translate their About page, and see if that makes any sense.

They also organize conferences, have a podcast, and do tons of other things.

As far as funding goes, from what I could find out, they are independent, no media group is behind them, and they have a few grants and crowdfunding.

@maique It is, honestly, my dream to do exact the same thing for a Swedish audience, in Stockholm. Collect a few dedicated colleagues and start a thing like that.

@ndreas Oh, thatā€™s cool! In their funding page they have a couple of ideas. They got money from Facebook, Google, and some others. One of grants comes from the posts in creole, so I guess you canā€™t apply for that one, but it seems there are still some ways to fund a project like that.

@maique Such a beautiful mural. And also, love the plazaā€™s flooring

@pratik It is a great one, yes. As far as the flooring goes, if you hadnā€™t mentioned it, I wouldnā€™t give it a second thoughtšŸ™‚ The whole city is like this šŸ¤£ Not exactly the same, of course, most of it is white only, no design in black, but this is the norm here. Shoes complain a lot, as do trolleys from tourists!

@Pilchuck It should be printed on every guide to the country by now, but somehow we still watch in disbelief as the trolleys keep coming šŸ¤£

@maique Ā«TheyĀ» should invent wheel cushions. To put around the trolley wheels. Or trolley-trolleys with bigger rubber wheels. @pilchuck
