Giving Overcast a new try.

@maique I've tried Overcast in the past. Coming from Pocket Casts I found it very hard to use. On a recent podcast episode @marco described a new feature 2022.2 had that allows people to mark episodes as played, and that he couldn't understand why people use it that way. (I'm paraphrasing). That is exactly how I use Pocket Casts. I do not listen to every single episode.

I think it is a great app. Very well made. But doesn't fit my mental model.

@cdevroe That’s one of my issues as well. Marco seems to have an opinion about everything, and can’t really understand anyone who has a different one.

I found PocketCasts odd at first, coming from Castro, but now I’m enjoying it. The new Overcast update prompted me to try it again, but I’m sure I’ll be back to PocketCasts soon.

@maique @cdevroe that’s one of my issues with Marco lately as well… an opinion about everything but not understanding different views. In my eyes that‘s crucial to build good apps. You can have your opinion, but you should listen to the users at least. He came around to it, but now I think the app is worse somehow. I’m „afraid“ of trying other podcast apps… Castro didn‘t work for me in the past. Also, I don‘t listen to many podcasts anymore unfortunately… makes a switch more difficult somehow.

@maique Huge fan of PocketCasts myself. I’m also always trying something else and always go back. Plus it is cross platform and I use it both on iOS and Android.

@hutaffe @cdevroe @maique @marco I kind of feel like the odd-man here. Overcast for me has, since its first release, worked as intended (perhaps for me and a handfull of people). It is very hard for me to go and use other podcasts apps, I always comeback to Overcast. Damn, I remmeber even the podcast I litsened to and heard marco talk about overcast thew first time. It was an episode of Debug with Rene and Guy back in 2014. Anyways, Any other way, doesn't work in my brain.

@maique I love Overcast because it’s simple and has a good Apple Watch app. I’m not a heavy podcast listener but I enjoy the speed boost and the new Home Screen. Everything else is nicely tucked away so I don’t ever have to think about it.

@maique I’m using Overcast now, though keeping an eye on what feels like the long promised Castro upgrade. The Castro workflow with its Queue worked well for me, but a small bug and the seemingly more expensive subscription cost verses other podcast apps, made me switch to Overcast. I didn’t find it easy to switch, kind of like squeezing a foot into a tight shoe(!), but have a workflow of sorts now. As @cdevroe & @gaby have said, I think that it is about finding an app which fits how your mind thinks.

@Gaby oh, I always was a fan of Overcast! It was the only app that worked for me. But somehow I have the urge to try out something else now. I don’t like the UI changes. But it’s kind of a lot of effort 😅

@maique I’m glad there is choice in this area. Like to do lists, and notes, everyone has their own style.

@Gaby Totally reasonable. I’m glad you have an app that works for you. 👏

@hutaffe I appreciate when apps have an opinion and stick to it. It is no doubt why Overcast is successful. If it were like every other app than it may not be.

Glad there is choice!

@cdevroe I use it for music, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be listening to podcast on there either.
