@ajennische I don't think I have something in my life that affected me in the same way. I never liked scary movies, horror is a genre I don't enjoy until today. Maybe it's the fear I'll have something stuck in my brain forever, but I've never been a fan.

As far as water goes, only lakes give me a little pause. When I was three my parents took me to the pool, and I swam for that team for 13 years, with daily (and a lot of times twice a day) sessions. A lot of diving after I left too. The water is like a second home, and I respect it a lot, but can't say I've ever felt scared, or anxious. If you don't count the lakes. I don't trust what's a the bottom there 🤣😂

@maique so you’re a swimmer. You could teach me some day we meet. I need to improve my crawling. I wish I never had to think about what’s down there but I’ll have to live with it I guess. But, I have to say I’m improving. I’m getting less and less less anxious about the whole thing.

@ajennische I wouldn't call myself a swimmer these days, but my brother and I were pretty serious back then. I was not as good as he was, but managed to become National champion as part of a relay race. I was the weakest of the four. My brother has more championship titles than he can remember. Up to this day his group of friends are the guys from the swim team. He also went on to a coaching job at the same team for a while, after he stopped swimming.

It one of the skills I believe everyone should have, more so if you live close to water. I've seen so many kids afraid of the water, not able to have fun with their friends at the beach and pools, it's not nice. They should teach people how to swim in school, in my opinion.

@maique agreed on the necessity for swimming in school. In Sweden it’s mandatory. But here security and life saving is prioritised so you don’t get a chance to learn how to crawl in school. Here it’s only breastroke that’s being teached to kids.

@ajennische That’s cool, I had no idea it was mandatory in Sweden, but should have guessed, right? Maybe we’ll have that in a few decades 🤣🤣🤣

@maique but due to immigration many adults in Sweden don’t know how to swim, which is a shame. But there is classes for that group as well though not mandatory.

@maique @ajennische It was mandatory classes in Norway too, but I still didn’t get the hang of it. I can swim under water, but not on it. It’s a bit hard to breathe under water though… 🏊🏻‍♂️

@odd Hahahahahahaha.. That's when diving classes can really make a difference. I had trouble breathing underwater as well, but having one of those air tanks strapped to my back really made it much easier!

@odd unfortunate it’s very tough to breath under water. I took crawling classes a couple of years ago. One of the best things I’ve done. After that I can join swimruns, so fun!

@maique I took the first basic divers degree but disliked having the air tanks strapped to my back. Free diving was my thing ... but since I live where I live it's not something you do volontarily 😋. In lakes it gets pretty cold 4m down 🥶

@maique But your right, the diving classes made a huge difference to how behaved in water,I got that "water feeling" which made everything so much easier.

@jemostrom Being cold underwater is awful! I did my first one on holiday, and came back to my sunny country, gathered a few friends, and we did a ton of stuff on our usually warmer waters. We figured it was almost as expensive to do courses as it was to pay for regular dives, so we just kept going. We would dive and learn something new. These days it's great when I go somewhere and can enjoy it.

@jemostrom I love feeling at home in the water. That's why I'd like everyone around here to be able to enjoy it without fear or anxiety. It makes a huge difference, I believe.

@ajennische I sent my kids to swimming school earlier this summer and to my surprise they actually thought crawl as the basic swimming technique, so maybe this has changed in schools too now?

@maique @jemostrom my brother lives in Mallorca. He’s used to be teaching free diving.

@maique Yes !!! I learned to dive indoors, for obvious reasons, and I was at the stage where I could get to 10m (that was how deep the pool was) without taking any strokes, stay there for 1-2 minutes and then slowly swim to the surface. And I really loved that relaxed feeling I had in the water. I then tried to do the same in a lake, got to about 4m and then turned around and swam FAST to the surface - brrrrrrrr. But since I disliked diving with gear I haven't continued diving and now it has been many, many, many years since the last time.
