Aaron Hockley nails it when has say that Instagram is No Longer a Photography Social Network

Instagram is a general-purpose visual (but not just photography) social network.

In fact, the ‘Gram is all about driving likes and followers, and has little to do with great photography

@desparoz Great read, and so true. Sad, but true.

@maique It is sad, but it is good that there are alternatives, like Flickr and of course M.b with Sunlit…

@desparoz Flickr and Sunlit are alternatives as far as photo sharing goes, true. But Instagram has a few other tricks up it's sleeve, and those are hard to replicate. I do get the occasional assignment through Instagram and, for a photographer, at least on my space it's almost mandatory to have an account. Flickr lost that years ago. Beats Instagram as far as sharing with quality goes, and other things, but the community is gone. Instagram also allows us to keep in the loop regarding what other photographers are up to, and friends and family as well, in the same spot. They really cornered that part of the market. For some (myself included) it's impossible to just quit now.

@maique All very true. I am kind of glad that I never really jumped deep into IG.

Flickr is actually starting to get back some of hte community feels now. Its admittedly got a long way to go, but it is a start.

And community is us, so the more we gather in Flickr (or M.b./Sunlit), and critique and support, the better the community will be.

Let's face it, IG is not a place for critique—and those who want critique don't go there.

@desparoz I was a photojournalist for a couple of decades, then moved on to travel reportage and set photography. These days, will travel being what it is, mainly set photography, and the occasional portrait for the odd corporate client. And I shoot my wife a baby daughter a lot too.

I would love to have the Flickr of old times back, keeping my fingers crossed you're right.
