I’ve been buying more music lately, but streaming isn’t going anywhere. write.as/jackbaty/…

@jack interesting. I had a massive CD library that I ripped back in the day. I use Apple MusicMatch, so Apple syncs my music with their higher quality catalog and makes things that aren’t in their catalog (older Hawaiian Music) available in my music library. I think it’s $20/yr

@jack I have wondered about similar things, but I'm currently very happy with Roon paired with Qobuz, and a ripped from CD/downloaded music collection. I did have an Apple Music subscription at one time, and the convenience was great. However, I find that Qobuz has a much better catalogue for the kinds of music I listen to, and the quality is great. The only thing I wish Roon did like Apple Music is to separate different users' libraries, so that Mr B's love of EDM wasn't quite so in my face! He probably feels the same about my folk collections...

@bsag Do Roon's "profiles" not work for isolating libraries? I haven't tried them because my wife is perfectly happy with Apple Music and hasn't given Roon a second look. I will miss having the Qobuz library available, but I feel like I need to try living without it.

@jack Not entirely. They do ensure that the analysis and recommendations is done on music that you have played personally under your profile, but everything in albums, artists etc. is lumped together and there seems no way to filter it by profile. It's doubly annoying as Qobuz now offers various 'family' packages which enable separation at that level, but then there seems no way to feed that into two profiles at the Roon level.

@hawaiiboy dropping “older Hawaiian music” like it’s no big deal?! Pro move. What do you like?

@jack I liked this post and the comments. I dropped Qobuz last year in an effort to save money. I miss it every day but I get by. I also began re-ripping my CDs recently because they were all on different formats (MP3, ACC, ALAC, etc.). As much as I want to go Roon, man is it pricey. Still, if I were to go back to streaming. Roon+Qobuz seems like a great combo. Especially if you also start ripping the LPs. (I have one box of LPs left from when I sold my turntable in 2015 just before my first kid was born. I await a day when the kids are old enough that it’s safe to go back to vinyl.)

@lukemperez "it’s safe to go back to vinyl" I never thought about vinyl ever being unsafe but that makes sense! :).

@jack it’s the vinyl that isn’t safe to leave out, nor a turntable with sensitive parts. You can imagine what a toddler might do to a stylus out of nothing but innocent curiosity.
