Manuel Moreale wrote about Spotify: "[T]hey keep adding all these bizarre new things that I’m always left wondering if I’m a very odd user and other people’s use of Spotify is so much different than mine. Like who watches video podcasts on Spotify? Why is a music app getting into videos?" I’ve not used any feature built by Spotify that didn’t directly relate to playing music as audio, nor do I know anyone that does. They’re more likely to get in my way, making them less than useless to me. And yes, this includes podcasts1. "Who knows, maybe 2025 is the year I jump off the Spotify ship." I’ve said... lmika.org

@Annie @Imika What are good alternatives for streaming music?

@lmika @Anne @thosch My family left Spotify last year because of our dissatisfaction with all their extra junk we never signed up for. We ended up with Tidal because it’s basically Spotify without all the desperate, non-music hustles.

@gregmoore Oh, interesting. I haven't really looked into alternatives (I mean, there's Apple Music but 🤷‍♀️). Will check out Tidal.

@Annie @gregmoore @lmika @thosch I use Tidal (for hi-res) mostly, and my wife basically replaced her old iPod with YouTube Music on her phone.

Tried Qobuz, which maybe better for buying and downloading. Amazon Music is another option. Deezer, too, iirc?

@gregmoore I took a look at TIDAL and it looked very, very good.

But then I had to realize, that the album Satiesfied Mind from The Walkabouts is not in the catalog.

That’s it. That‘s the show stopper…

@JohnBrady If classical is what you're after, take a look at Apple Music too. They have an entirely separate, dedicated app for navigating their classical catalog.

@thosch My daughter and I are still sore about some of the missing albums in tidal but I solved it by using it as an excuse to buy them. 😂

@gregmoore @Anne @thosch Yeah, I have heard of Tidal although I haven’t tried it. I’d probably like to avoid music streaming altogeather and own the music I purchase, at least for songs that I know I’ll listen to repetitively.

@davidmarsden Yeah, I’ve been buying music through Qobuz this past week and it’s been great (although a little expensive).

@lmika We also buy almost all the albums we like, regardless of whether they are available on streaming, because streaming platforms are not reliable sources for music.

@gregmoore We listen to a lot of music through our Sonos devices. At home, I can integrate the missing albums from the NAS. But on vacation, that’s not possible. At least not as long as I don’t set up a connection to the NAS at home or take a NAS with me.

@thosch Yeah, having access to literally your entire music catalog is a forever problem.
