I’m starting to suspect that Slack might not be the productivity magic-bullet it’s touted to be. That is, unless your job is getting distracted every 30 minutes. In that case, Slack works great!

@lmika yeah, I agree, and one of my pet peeves is people who want to use it for a pseudo form of 'documentation'. Not good to have key knowledge split over various chats, not to mention email or other systems.
@rickcogley Ooh, yeah. Having knowledge scattered about in various channels is not good either: it's like an archaeological dig every-time you need to find something. That said, I'm probably guilty of contributing to that problem myself. I'm trying to get better at it though. 😅
@lmika I recently came across a company that has some very reasonable guidelines for asynchronous communication.
@lmika Agreed! Slack management is definitely a skill you need in the current office environment.
@mcg I’ve never used Teams myself but I know several people who have and they all hate it. I almost want to give it a try just to see how bad it actually is. 😀
@cdevroe Yes, this! Certain people at work really need to get better at point 1 and 2, and I need to get better at point 3. I think we all need to get better at point 5.
@TheRealChadwick I think part of it boils down to one of expectations, like not expecting a response to a DM immediately. This is probably something I can get better at when a DM comes to me. Also, not being afraid of turning off notifications for an hour or two so I can get some deep work done as well. Might be just all in my head but when I do this I feel like I’m indicating to others that I’m ignoring them. Maybe pairing it with a status saying “working on something” might be the way to go. 🤔
@lmika Definitely agree on managing expectations. I find most of my direct coworkers are hesitant to start a slack conversation unless they need to, though there are exceptions. The worst for me is dealing with the fact that my company doesn't really use email, so everything gets buried in a slack conversation somewhere. Search helps but you do need to know the right keywords to search for.
