Until halfway through this move, I never seriously considered ridding myself of all physical books and going digital-only.

@sirshannon Every move I make I downsize a little more. I still have an uncomfortable amount of boxes of books, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, VHS tapes. At this point it’s just data. Data in light form, or data in heavy form. I need to convert to light form data, it’s easier on my back and far less to move.
@sirshannon I only buy ebooks now. Among other things, we’re out of shelf space and room to add more. My wife has every book she ever acquired, including those obtained while she was getting her Ph.D. We could probably open our own library.
@scrivolical And then what do you do with all of the DVDs, etc?
I ripped all my CDs a decade ago but kept them for some reason… then iTunes destroyed a few thousand tracks so I guess I will be ripped some of them again if/when I ever get around to figuring out what’s missing.
Nobody wants my DVDs, Blu-rays, and CDs but at least they are light. Books, on the other hand…
@larand The last time I bought an additional bookcase, it didn’t hold all of the books piled beside my chair on the floor :(
However, danger piles of books will discourage me from buying more books. Ebooks don’t have anything like that.
@sirshannon Indeed. I have everything I’ve purchased in the last five years or so on my Kobo (and also backed up, of course). Much more space-efficient. 😉
@sirshannon I kept mine as well, as physical backup, and as proof-of-purchase. They’ll eventually succumb to bit-rot as the layers degrade on the discs and they get pitted out.
I find it hard to part with books, though it has been years since I’ve read a physical book.
@scrivolical I love to look at and feel a good book in my hands. It adds a lot of bonus enjoyment to the reading experience. The 3rd thing I love about them is giving them to someone else who will enjoy them.
@sirshannon I used to love that. But with each passing decade the books have gotten heavier.
@scrivolical yes.
And postage is so expensive… (or I would mail you a great book).
