An informal survey: When visiting a blog (not via RSS), which layout do you prefer? (I like them all, so help me decide.)

  1. Full posts
  2. Titles and a brief excerpt
  3. Titles only

@jack Number 1 or 2, depending on the length and style of the full posts. If they are >1,000 words and/or have headings of their own I prefer #2, otherwise #1.

@jack Titles, maybe with a brief excerpt, but not too fussed by that. I find full posts annoying to have to scroll through on a listings page. Funnily enough, I blogged about this many years ago: www.thisdaysportion.com/posts/tit...

@jack Titles and a brief excerpt for me, though it doesn’t have to be all that brief. Maybe two paragraphs. But, like @leonp, I don’t like to have to scroll past a series of long posts. Maybe have a cut-off after, say, 350 words so that shorter posts would be shown in full?

@jack I prefer 2 (if excerpts are available) otherwise 3. Having to scroll through full posts on the index I find to be really cumbersome.

@jack Full posts. Unless it's a very long post so a custom truncation after a couple of paragraphs is fine.

@jack Based on the thread following your post, I have changed my posts to Full Posts, though Safari’s aggressive caching is fighting that decision.

@jack Titles only, if it's a longform blog or a semi-longform one, and full posts only for blogs that primarily contain microposts or photos.

I'm surprised at the number of people on this thread favoring full posts!

@jack Wow, I am surprised by the number of people that want full posts. That is hard for me. I much prefer title and an excerpt to scan through and find something again, or decide if it’s worth investing more time to read.
