@bradenslen What if those people in the walled garden prefer the walled garden and just don't care about the things you care about? I don't care about doing my own oil changes or repairing my car but I know people who care deeply.

@khurtwilliams Well, they would have to show some interest, some curiousity first. I'm not going to waste their time and mine "helping" someone set up a blog if they have zero interest. They are free to do what they want. Sometimes it helps to make the offer to help and just leave it on the table. Some few might come back months later and ask for your help.

There is another factor: I think many of us take our knowledge of the web for granted. What seems simple or obvious to us might be totally opaque or even scary to someone who only knows Facebook or Twitter, and they might be too shy to ask about other social places on the Web.

@bradenslen But there are hundred of thousands of WordPress.com and tumblr blogs. Are your sure people are not aware of how trivial it is to setup a website?

@bradenslen and I am also making the point that there is nothing wrong with using Facebook. That is can be quite a useful place to connect with people I care about.

@bradenslen @khurtwilliams

To put a spin on the Will Rogers quote ...

”Not everyone can be in the band ... some people have to sit on the sidewalk and clap.”

I would add not everyone even wants to.

@khurtwilliams @JohnPhilpin It goes without saying, not everyone is going to have the wherewithall to write a book and you still need readers for that book.

@khurtwilliams True. I have two distinct problems with Facebook, 1. Facebook the corporation and their spying, 2. The low, nasty, base, trolling level of discourse I often see from people on FB and other social networks.

On #1, it's hard for me to preach privacy online while participating on Facebook. I do try to practice what I preach, I'm not always successful or quick about it but I do try.

@khurtwilliams Do they know what to do with it once they have one?

I don't have all the answers. I'm trying to encourge the reemergant growth of a part of the Web not controlled by shark eyed corporate Suits.

@bradenslen have you read this? People over 65 are the most likely to share fake news on Facebook, study finds

@khurtwilliams Hehe. I'm a Boomer although under 65. Don't get me started on the failings of my generation. But I think confidence men have always targeted older people as a group. They hint at that in the article.
