To Journal, or Not to Journal?

Believe it or not, I do not keep a journal.

I'd love to keep a journal. Nothing too deep, but maybe it would be. I think I would keep track of some daily thoughts, random facts, musings.

But I worry about privacy.

@daj I do journal. Although it’s not a deep, thought-provoking journal. More a diary of the day with some general views.
If anyone got hold of it I’m not too concerned they’ll read about a relatively simple existence!

@daj I actually built my own journal, although I haven’t been using it for the last few weeks.

If you’re interested - journal-demo.kevquirk.com

But be warned, it’s mediocre. 🤣

@kev interesting. I immediately recognise simple css. 😁
I did roll my own a few years ago too, but in the end I didn't like it. My biggest fail was using mysql rather than sqlite like you have, which makes it far more portable. 👌 Perhaps I could adapt yours.

@daj it’s digital. In Day One.
I love when it shows me this day in history.

@daj more than welcome to. If you do make improvements (as I’m not a dev) please consider a PR if you have time so I can improve the project, and learn from someone who knows what they’re talking about. 🤣

I’m thinking about completely removing the Auth as I don’t think I did it very well. Might just say in the read me that it’s probably best not to host publicly, but if you do, put it behind something like htpasswd.

@kev oh, I think you deserve far more credit than you propose. 😁
I have some ideas which i could bounce off you. I'll need to fork and try it out locally. I've only tried the demo.

I've also just realised you're Mr Simple Css. Last night I clocked the styling, but didn't realise you were the actual dev. I used it on a personal project a year ago and I've seen it elsewhere a few times. Very cool

@daj for my sins, I am Mr Simple CSS 🤣

It does seem to be doing the rounds. Someone mentioned a few weeks ago that DHH called it out in a Ruby demo.

@daj I do journal but more to keep track of events and quick ramblings.

I use Obsidian as it's easy to use and all on my own devices.

@gobino I've looked at Obsidian in the past, when I wanted a simple note taking app. I thought it was quite bloated and busy so it put me off.
I've never considered it as a journal but I must re-evaluate

@daj It works quite well for me, although it can be slow to load on mobile. But Obsidian works cross-platform, so I can check and update on all the platforms I use (mac, ios & windows).

If you're on Apple only, I would recommend Bear.
