I’m no longer a #Linux user, but I’ve been listening to a lot of #LinuxMatters by @popey @wimpy and @marxjohnson recently and I’m now eyeing my old ThinkPad X1 thinking “hmmmmm maybe I could just…” 😂

@kev @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson Like you I switched over to a MacBook Air M1 a while back. But lately I have started using my desktop running Fedora as my daily driver again, mainly because the MBA doesn’t support more than one external monitor. But honestly, not missing anything from the mac…
@thewk @kev @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson I switched from macOS some years back to Windows 7 due to the inability to game. Was also furious at the repair costs of the iMac when going to Apple. I had ignored their fearmongering over self repair with the MacBook 1,1 and kept that going for years. Their support services were insane, very off-putting and the pricing was ridiculous. They were charging £500 for a hard drive swap! Then went to Linux soon after Windows 10.
@thewk @kev @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson Now own a Fairphone and a Framework and have no reason to switch elsewhere. Love the ability to build an entire Laptop from 1st party parts bought at a very fair price from their site. And the huge support for Linux.
Fairphone has disappointed me by brining out a 5, when they could have brought out upgradable parts. Also, happy at their idea that once you buy from them, you can do what you like. Warranty is still valid no matter what.
Why not using Linux anymore?
@thewk I have my Mac connected to a docking station and that supports 2 external monitors.
@tripplehelix @thewk @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson I’ve been considering what next when my current crop of hardware dies (M1 MBA, iPhone 13 mini & iPad Air) I’m not sure I’m happy replacing any of it with the Apple tax, but MacOS is great and has no ads. Linux still has its gremlins that need fixing/workarounds and I have no interest in that. That’s why I stopped using it in the first place.
@kev Yeah, I have those thoughts at times. Seems like a great idea. Then I remember how much fun it is...for the first 48 hours. And how after that, the fun stops and it's death-by-a-thousand-cuts again. Still eyeballing my ThinkPad, too, though. It's running OpenBSD currently, which was an adventure I won't be repeating.
@kev 💓 Thanks for listening to @linuxmatters Kev
During the day, I use #macOS more than #Linux because @anchore gave me a MacBook Pro to do my job. So proportionally, I likely use macOS more than Linux.
I still use my ThinkPad(s) a lot, though. One is a 'server' running in my office. 😂
No multi-screen on my M1 MacBook Air is indeed a problem, but it's a great little portable machine for lugging anywhere. It's never far away from me. Plus, I put @ubuntuasahi on it, which works *brilliantly* as an alternative to #macos
@kev @popey @marxjohnson Thanks for listening Kev 😃 I'm delighted to hear you're enjoying Linux Matters 🐧🎙️
I have a MacBook Air M2, mostly for travelling due to the epic battery endurance 🔋 With Nix, Home Manager, and nix-darwin on macOS, it feels a lot like "Linux" just with a different desktop environment.
I do dual boot it with NixOS for Apple Silicon. What the @AsahiLinux team have accomplished is astonishing, and when your M1 ages out something you can use to extend its useful life 👍️
@kev @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson
yep just do it, the user friendly distros are all a 15 min install, quicker than the time it takes to work out what is wrong with your windows/mac and fix it
@jbaty kev@fosstodon.org popey@mastodon.social I use macOS, Windows and Linux every day. My setup is not for everyone: I have a dual boot desktop (Windows / Linux) and a docking station for my Mac.
Mac is for work and blogging and photos. Work requires Microsoft 365, Photos require Photoshop, blogging is on Microblog and Emacs and these guys all work good on Mac (Emacs is the only thing that require a little bit tweaking on the Mac but then it works fine).
Windows is mostly games, sometimes testing for work. I do that also because it's my "not safe" machine, which is not on a VPN, and I don't put anything sensitive (work or personal) on it. That way all these game stores and this AAA games and their launches can run crazy. I can wipe the Windows machine and not worry about anything, pretty much.
Linux is private (to me, Apple and privacy is a nice gimmick, nothing more), and some fun with AI imaging and infosec when I practice these old skills. It's also a good place to go for free somewhere when I want to test something out. It's best for syncing files, accessing my Synology and RP, etc.
@kev @chris @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson Very interesting... I use Ubuntu exactly because it 'just works' (tm) when compared to Windows... Well, I guess not everything works for everyone...
@kev @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson do it! My old gen 5 X1 is purring along with Arch. Super stable and my personal dev machine away from my work MacBook Pro.
@wimpy @popey @marxjohnson apologies for blowing up your notifications, gents. Should have thought about that before tagging you all in. 😂
@wimpy it was actually talking about how you tweaked Pantheon to make it more mac like that piqued my interest. I will probably chuck Asahi on it when the M1 stops being supported.
@kev A decade ago I left Linux because of the gremlins. Now I'm going back, hopefully with fewer gremlins:

@theron29 @kev @chris @popey @wimpy @marxjohnson I've also been better with Linux than Windows. I use several distros on a few cheapo 2nd hand machines. They run great and do what I want. I have a Windows laptop through work that's in constant need of updates and reboots--which apparently NEED to happen as soon as I open it at the beginning of a meeting. It's a year old but it's slower than my 6 year old Linux laptop. And-- though not MS's fault--I can only install apps approved by my work.
