One of the benefits of not just using Google (including YouTube) or Twitter for search is that I am regaining a lot of my general research skills. The web is full of so much information and it truly seems like most people are comfortable being spoon-fed by a singular option.

@simonwoods I do admire this, and DDG is my default, but the number of times I need to !g to get the results I want that should be obvious is high... like 80% high.

@jsonbecker I'd rather use the websites where the answers are but I also have some research nerdery within so I'm quite biased.

It's also about being pragmatic. One day all of those answers we find and consider obvious on Google just won't be there, purely because Google said so and you will have no recourse at all. Since I use this stuff for my work that's just a bad way to get a job done.

@simonwoods I’m not sure I understand “use the sites where the answers are”

@jsonbecker Use search -> find website with what I need -> bookmark site -> next time just use bookmark.

Just old-school use of the web. Also add in directories, links from blogs, resources like the various IndieWeb projects, and independent networks like Micro.blog. I know much prefer this model to falling back on a silo; it's beyond admirable, since it actually works better due to being directly linked to the actual information.
