29 Years Ago, FPS Gaming Changed Forever

Perhaps most importantly, Quake has not been surpassed by any modern shooter when it comes to what it set out to do. The game is just as sharp, fun, and challenging to play today as it was the day it came out…The core of Quake is timeless, and any gamer, young or old, can pick up the game right now and be pulled into its dark Lovecraftian world and addictive gameplay.

The original Quake was a little before my time. I’ve played through it a million times, but my holy grail was always Quake III Arena. id Software is legendary.

@grubz Quake III was awesome, but I’m sentimental about Quake II. Our work crew was allowed to play Quake II if we had no projects due and our production area was tidy. This reward system kept us dillogent. I also had to learn to fight for my life when spawning on MIT servers.

@josephaleo oh dude I LOVED Quake 2! It almost felt more like Doom with how you were a space marine in this futuristic setting… I just got it on the Switch not too long ago and it comes with all the expansion packs. Might have to fire that up tonight lol

@josephaleo it’s a nice little console! I played a couple of newer Nintendo titles when I first got it but the last few months I’ve mostly been playing retro stuff and newer Metroidvanias like Blasphemous and The Messenger. Lots of great indie games on the Switch!
