@Mtt I am using the RCA inputs on the back. They are not USB powered, they need to be plugged into the wall.

Anyone have a good suggestion for reasonably priced desktop speakers for a Mac Mini that work with the Apple keyboard volume buttons?

@Mtt I have the PreSonus Eris E3.5 powered speakers hooked up to my Mac Mini. Excellent sounding little speakers currently under $100 on Amazon.
