Moved all my notes from Obsidian to Bear yesterday, the constant jankiness of Obsidian made me have another look at Bear. Decided to give it a try and see how it goes.

@philbowell I did the same! What I’ve been amazed at already is how quickly it still syncs.

@danalcantara yes! I’ve been amazed by it as well. I can open the app and use it on any device without having to wait! It makes such a difference.

@philbowell Now if only the folks at Ulysses would get their act together with sync (my iPhone regular has to completely redownload the entire database…)

@danalcantara ugh, that sucks. My use of Ulysses has dropped off a lot, doesn’t feel like it’s the writing app for me anymore.

@philbowell I hope for a report back in a few weeks. Bear is appealing but I’m not (yet) willing to give up also having Obsidian available on my Boox reader.

@petebrown I don’t know if you’re a part of The Draft (the Circle community that the team behind Ulysses run) but one of their team replied to a complaint about the sync stuff and explained that they’re still using iCloud Drive to manage sync which is the actual cause of the problem. He did say they are in the process of transitioning to CloudKit which should fix the problem.

@danalcantara Interesting. Icloud had been fine for me with obsidian for a long time and then (6 months?) back it suddenly went unpredictable, slow and missing files. I wonder if it's a similar thing affecting Ulysses or something else. One good thing about Ulysses using iCloud ( not cloud kit) is that you can export to something else easily. I hope that sticks around.

@ChrisJWilson That is very interesting. Based on the export options available in Bear (which uses CloudKit) and the ease I had with getting my Obsidian vault into it, I don’t see why there would be a problem with Ulysses moving to CloudKit and continuing to offer all of the export options it currently has.
