If Biden becomes the next President and his heartbeat stops after hearing the news, I have these questions:

  • Will Kamala auntie be sworn in as President? If so, who will be the Vice President?
  • Will there be another election to choose the Vice President?
  • Will Trump be the next President?

@ridwan Okay. I'll give this a go. But, first off, why is 'auntie' part of Kamala Harris' name in your question? Genuinely curious here. I've never seen that wording before.

  1. Yes, The vice President assumes the office of the President if the president dies.
  2. The Vice President nominates a new Vice President and the Senate confirms the new Vice President.
  3. No, the losing presidential canidate does not become the president.

@joelhamill It’s an ageist slur

@joelhamill @pratik Naah! I wouldn’t call that as an ageist slur. Kamala is half Indian-Tamil and I’m full Indian-Tamil. We call our elders outside the family as Uncles & Aunties, sometimes as a mark of respect and sometimes as an underlying “dig”. 🤣

We are facing our General Election on 4th July and I know how a Parliamentary system works but wasn’t sure how Presidents are chosen if one vacates the seat.

My important question would be: if the VP becomes the POTUS, can the opposition force another election or make it difficult for the new POTUS to govern?

@ridwan No, the opposition party cannot force another. Elections are held after terms are finished. The length of the term depends on the office.

However, the opposition party can make it difficult to govern. In fact, that has been the Republican party tactic to governing for 20 years now.

@joelhamill 3 major economies faced/facing elections viz., UK, India & USA. India is a heading towards to a true coalition government. I hope the Tories are kicked out after July 4th. And, whoever wins in US will reshape history. Interesting times ahead.
