iPhone users: I need an app that allows me to message myself & works with Shortcuts. The Messages app does everything I need, except…when you message yourself, it displays as both outgoing & incoming. Signal has a Note to Self feature, but it doesn’t work with Shortcuts. Suggestions?

@Mtt Ideas I've toyed around with:

  • A separate (private) email address and client for this sole purpose - A single user Slack/Discord
  • Creating a second AppleID and sending messages to it
  • Appending notes to a single note in any simple notes app

None are perfect, but all are manageable if I can't find something else

@Mtt I'm not a big shortcuts user but I'm pretty sure whatsapp supports short cuts. I message myself on there because I don't get the message duplicates (sent and received)

@jagibson That's good to know. I'll see if it works!

@Mtt Slack does this well, if you're in that ecosystem. They call out messaging yourself as a 'notes to self' feature/workflow.

@Mtt I wonder if Beeper.com or Delta.Chat ( @delta ) support shortcuts? both have note to self (and are e2e encrypted)

@jonah Doesn’t appear so. 😕

@matt Slack lets you add notes in your own DM

@Mtt Does Email Me fit your needs? It has Shortcuts support. I use the app and like it very much.

@Mtt I use WhatsApp for that and it works pretty well, supports Shortcuts too.

@crossingthethreshold Now that is interesting! I’m giving it a shot for sure. Do you do anything special on the email client side with rules/filters/etc? Or just keep it in inbox?

@Mtt I filter them into a folder called Email Me, so that I can find them quickly and also remember that I sent myself a reminder (especially important if I sent one just before going to bed, and forgot that I did so). Knowing me I just think that they would get lost if I didn’t put them somewhere.

On another note I didn’t think that I had a need for such an app until I tried it. I have found it very helpful to quickly catch things that come to me. I’m sure that there are other ways out there, but this one has just worked for me.

@crossingthethreshold After 1 day, I'm really liking it. You could create a Shortcut that mimics a lot of the features, but nothing nearly as elegant as it is. Right now, I'm already considering making the Lifetime purchase. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm thinking maybe your brain works similar to mine. Do you have any other suggestions?

Here are some of my favorite apps/etc:

  • Remind Me Faster (iOS)
  • Reminders MenuBar (Mac)
  • Custom Shortcut for Adding Notes (lets me quickly choose a folder or audio note)
  • ShareShot for Screenshots (iOS)
  • StopTheMadness and Wipr (Safari) - Carrot's Hidden Premium Mini Subscription
  • A crazy ugly background when phone is in DND mode so I don't forget
