@bennomatic when people complain about the ‘PC Police’ or political correctness in general I wonder what is so wrong with being correct. When the stories about ‘political correctness gone mad’ hit the UK press in years gone by they often turned out to be just stories.

@johnjohnston an anti political correctness stance is generally a fence of white privilege.

@bennomatic This is very well-stated. Thank you for writing it.

@johnjohnston Sometimes it surprises me the people who get hooked by those stories. I had a friend try to convince me the other day that universities are effectively shut down because when they try to lecture on certain topics where the thinking has changed, anyone who doesn't like to hear any outdated content will immediately shout down the professor and take over the class.

Like, I'm sure it happens. I'm sure there's some 90 year old professor somewhere who still thinks that Columbus was a pure-and-simple hero and will brook no argument, and I'm sure that professor (and those of his ilk) occasionally get a shout-down. But the idea that this is some sort of epidemic that's destroying the university system is just ridiculous.

@jeremycherfas Agreed. I mean, I remember first hearing the term as a response to backlash against Andrew Dice Clay's humor in the 80s. And all I can think is, "Wait, what? You feel sad for the Dice Man's career being in shambles? This is the hill you're willing to die on?"

@bennomatic I don’t know who that is, and I probably won’t bother to find out.

@jeremycherfas Haha, yeah, don't bother. Just a comedian whose tomb stone might as well read, "Make mean-spirited ignorance great again."
